What Does ABA Stand for?

Sign that says ABA therapy with hands around it.

If you’re just beginning your search into therapies and resources available to children on the autism spectrum, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed. From ABA Therapy to family counseling, we know it can be a lot to take in. There is a wealth of information out there and figuring out how to sort through it all can leave you feeling a bit frazzled. Our dedicated team here at Blossom understands, and we’re here to help support you and your family through this process.

What is ABA Therapy?

By now, you’ve likely heard of or seen ABA Therapy mentioned and may be wondering what it is and how it can help your child. ABA, or Applied Behavioral Analysis, gives us a better understanding of how the environment can affect behavior, how behavior works, and how learning actually takes place. It focuses on specific behaviors and finding meaningful ways to replace one behavior for another. This science-based method of therapy allows us to take an in-depth look at a child’s various behaviors in real-life circumstances. Working to increase positive behaviors and replace behaviors that may be harmful or interfere with learning is key. More simply put, ABA has the incredible ability to help your child learn and develop new skills while changing or improving others. It also looks at changes that can be made to your child’s environment to help change his/her behaviors.

Changing Behaviors with ABA Therapy

So how can ABA Therapy change or modify your child’s behaviors? Positive reinforcement is a pillar of ABA and proven to make a significant difference in the lives of many children on the autism spectrum. A reward and consequence system tailored to your child is created. Special rewards are given only after a positive behavior is used. By using a reward system made up of something your child finds meaningful, the desired behavior is much more likely to be repeated. Rewards that your child values are much more encouraging and will eventually foster a new, positive behavior. When a behavior or skill is not completed successfully, a reinforcer is not given.

Which Behaviors Can ABA Change?

It is a common misconception that changing a behavior refers only to bad behaviors. However, ABA Therapy works to help your child with a wide variety of behaviors, including:

  • Communication
  • Grooming
  • Social skills
  • Academic skills
  • Sharing and working with others

Early intervention is key for children with autism spectrum disorder and most beneficial when implemented before your child is four years old. ABA is also most successful when carried out in the child’s home and school environments as well, and practiced for more than twenty hours each week.

Whether you require additional information on ABA Therapy, or you are ready to find a center that is right for your child and family, Blossom is here to assist. We offer an all-encompassing approach to help your child succeed, while also working with your entire family.
